Hooray for Unilever!

No more crocks of trans fat!
Finally, big (food) business is getting the message — GET the TRANS FATS OUT!!!  Recently, Unilever announced they are removing ALL hydrogenated oils from their “soft spreads.”  That is huge!  The reason being, many consumers are deceived by the current labeling laws, which allow a food manufacturer to claim “0 grams trans fat” per serving if it has .5 gram or less per serving.  But Smart Balance is probably to thank for pressuring its competitor into removing the trans fats, but they (Smart Balance) most likely did not expect Unilever to go all the way and remove hydrogenated oils completely from Country Crock and I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! Wooooo Hoooo! I don’t care who’s to thank or blame. It’s a really positive step toward helping Americans regain their health without having an advanced degree in nutrition or analyzing every darn label of every food item!

Late night eating linked to weight gain

I am often asked this or similar questions: “Is it ok to eat after 6 p.m.”  The answer I give is never a yes or no.  In general, it is not good to eat so lightly during the day and then come home starving and consume more than half of your total calories in the evening.

So here I must offer some new findings that do make this a more interesting question.  Shift workers take note! Although the research was conducted on mice and not humans, a new study has shown that mice who ate during what would otherwise be sleeping hours gained weight as compared to a group of mice who ate the same number of calories but only during their normal waking hours.  The findings of this study will appear in the October issue of Obesity.
